Acid Reflux and Neck Pain

It should be no small wonder that doctors who examine patients with chronic neck pain also may find acid reflux. Are these related symptoms? Some doctors think so...

Applied Kinesiologists are doctors trained to detect such relationships in the body. A frequent occurrence of neck pain may not just be a neck pain, according to chiropractors, medical doctors, or osteopaths trained in Applied Kinesiology (AK) evaluation.

Patients often relate to "sleeping wrong" or "sleeping in a funny position". If only the body were so simple, a person could just stop that activity. Fortunately, AK doctors are educated in the intricacies of the body from a holistic perspective, or looking at the entire body as one functioning unit. Shouldn't all doctors? After all, the entire body is all connected.

This discussion will cover a very common cause for neck pain- a Hiatal Hernia, or Hiatus Hernia. This is not the normal type of hernia, nor is surgery recommended. A hiatal hernia is a condition where the highest portion of the stomach has been pushed into a small opening (hiatus) of a muscle, called the diaphragm.

A myriad of symptoms can occur due to a hiatal hernia, such as headache, migraines, dysphagia, difficulty swallowing food or pills, neck pain, frozen shoulder or neck, acid reflux, heartburn, TMJ, and indigestion. The most common symptom is neck pain due to the mechanical connection between the stomach, esophagus, and neck muscles.

Chiropractic is an effective method of correcting both the neck dysfunction and stomach dysfunction , at the same time. Hiatal hernia is not always a surgical case. In fact, it is a routine procedure in most Applied Kinesiology-based practices. Patients are able to be treated in a comfortable manner without the use of drugs and surgery. Applied Kinesiology doctors have been taught to release a hiatal hernia manually, with minimal discomfort.
